Elders

Oakbrook Church is led and governed by a board of staff and lay elders.  The duties of the elders are threefold.  First, the elders are responsible for leading, governing, and guarding the “flock” of believers in the church.  Governing responsibilities include overseeing the programs and ministries of the church, encouraging and guiding the people and their various ministries, making all staffing and financial decisions, and setting the annual budgets.  Second, the elders devote themselves to praying regularly concerning the many affairs of the church.  Third, the elders spend considerable time sensing and discerning the will of God and the move of His Spirit in order to minister the word of God to the church.  Ministry of the word includes preaching, teaching, discipleship, setting the spiritual direction of the church, and protecting the flock from false doctrines and teachers.

The task of elder demands skilled men of high moral character who can be entrusted to fulfill the responsibilities with integrity and ability.  The integrity of an elder should be well established in their personal character, spiritual life, and family life.  A potential elder must be able to demonstrate his leadership capabilities by properly ruling, leading, and overseeing his family and home.  An elder must also possess the additional quality of being “able to teach.”  Key scriptures concerning the functions, duties, and characteristics of elders include: 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-11; 1 Peter 5:1-4; and Acts 6:4.

Currently, the board consists of two staff elders and five lay elders.
