Giving at Oakbrook Church

At Oakbrook, we want people to know that we are more interested in building a friendship and sharing a gift— the good news of Jesus — than in receiving money from them. That is one of the reasons why we do not pass an offering plate during worship.

That said, giving our time, money, and energies in the service of God and other people is a central aspect of following Jesus.  It has been passed down to us that Jesus himself taught that “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).  God knows that we experience life more deeply and richly when we bless others with our gifts.  That is why it is important for us to give back to God with a joyful heart, and not in a stubborn or reluctant manner.  As the apostle Paul wrote …

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  -2 Corinthians 9:7
