 MINISTRIES

Spiritual Formation

Oakbrook Church desires to equip all of its people with the best spiritual practices and disciplines to enable them to build ever-deepening personal relationships with God.

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER

In the Spring of 2025, Oakbrook pastors introduced the congregation to contemplative prayer, an approach to prayer that utilizes silence and stillness to help us sit in the presence of God. Cynthia Bourgeault, a Christian mystic, writes, "In essence, contemplative prayer is simply a wordless, trusting openness of self to the divine presence."Oakbrook members are finding that the practice awakens them to the very presence of God that dwells within them, and allows God to transform and renew their minds at the same time. The church has already conducted its first two contemplative prayer sitting sessions. Two additional sessions have been scheduled for Thursday, July 17 and Thursday, August 21. Each session will start at 7:00pm. For more information, please contact Pastor John Moyle at john@oakbrookchurch.org

COMMUNITY SCRIPTURE STUDY

In the Fall of 2025, Oakbrook Church plans to initiate several unique corporate Bible Studies designed to help our people flourish spiritually. We believe that when people study scripture together the presence of God is with them. The first study is built upon the Jewish Beit Midrash ("House of Study/Learning") in which students gather to investigate, study, learn and debate the meanings and applications of Biblical texts. Oakbrook members will gather in our own "house of learning" to wrestle with and debate together important New and Old Testament texts. A second study will utilize the contemplative practice Lectio Divina ("Holy Reading") to provide time and space for the sacred texts to move from our lips, into our minds, and finally into our hearts. Dates and times for these practices will be announced later this summer. For more information, please contact Pastor John Moyle at john@oakbrookchurch.org.

ACTS OF
GENEROSITY

Did you know that engaging in acts of generosity is one of the most effective spiritual formation practices that we have available to us? An ancient Hebrew idiom teaches us that having a "good eye" (ayin tovah) is to look out for the needs of others and be generous in giving to the poor. To have a "bad eye" (ayin ra'ah) is to be greedy and self-centered, blind to the needs of those around us. Jesus tells us that if "our eyes are good" our "whole body will be full of light," meaning that we will illuminate the dark places in our world. Oakbrook Church provides our members with ample opportunities to give generously towards the needs of others in our local area. For more information, please contact Pastor Kathy Mallett at kathy@oakbrookchurch.org.

Women's Ministry

Oakbrook Church’s women gather every two months for fun fellowship opportunities outside of Sunday morning services. Our gatherings are held either at the church or at local establishments in the Northern Virginia area. We also get together for fun outings such as the "paint by instruction" event, which was a real favorite among our women! In addition, the women celebrate expectant mothers, support members that need an extra meal, host gatherings on our home patios, and join the congregation for lunch at Santini’s every second Sunday of the month. All of our events are advertised well in advance on Oakbrook Church's Facebook page and in the E-Community News sent out by e-mail every Friday. If you have any questions, please contact Jenna Moyle at jenemoyle@gmail.com.
